Three colleges at The University of Alabama are collaborating to keep health care workers on the front- lines of this crisis safe. In response to the critical shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic, the College of Community Health Sciences, the Culverhouse College of Business and the College of Engineering are producing medical face guards for health care professionals across Alabama.
A prototype was originally designed by a UA student and was modified by staff in The Cube to reduce print time. The goal of the initial run is to produce 1,000 face guards, with hopes to expand to other types of PPE if we surpass the original goal.
CCHS Dean Ricky Friend is leading the coordination of distribution, all production will occur using eight 3D printers and the waterjet housed in the College of Engineering, and Culverhouse STEM Path to MBA and EMBA students have identified materials, including donation of plastic from UA alumni.
As a UA family, we can help reduce the spread of infection across our region. By supporting this project, our hope is to protect our health care workers as they treat members of our communities and help fight this pandemic.
